VillaSport fitness, spa complex set to open in July

Five pools, childrens club, cafe, resort-style amenities among offerings

Billed as the first family-oriented “premier” athletic club and spa of its size in the Portland area, the 130,000-square-foot VillaSport complex is taking shape across from the Nike World Headquarters. The two-story, 88,000-square-foot facility, situated next door to the rapidly developing 45-degree Central townhome and condominium complex, is set to open sometime in July with a seasonal staff of 250, noted Jeff Houghtaling, VillaSport’s membership director.

The club, which will host an open house membership-drive event on Saturday, April 5, will offer a plethora of fitness and spa-oriented amenities. They include five indoor and outdoor pools, some designated for lap swimming and others for recreation, classes and children’s activities; two 26-foot-high waterslides; 100 state-of-the-art cardio-oriented exercise machines; five exercise studios; a National Basketball Association-regulation court; a 12,000-square-foot kids’ club; steam rooms and sauna baths; hot tubs; 175 group exercise classes including spinning, yoga and pilates; a casual restaurant and bar, among many other offerings. by: TIMES PHOTO: JAIME VALDEZ - Tony Santiago, facility manager at VillaSport Athletic Club and Spa, walks toward the entrance of the under-construction complex at Southwest Murray Boulevard and Jenkins Road.

“It’s a private fitness resort that offers families an excellent place to go and experience a day spa,” Houghtaling said during a Tuesday morning tour of the VillaSport construction site. “It’s like getting a vacation every day.”

Monthly membership dues start at $108 for an individual and increase depending on the number and ages in a family household. While sales and specials are common, standard enrollment fees range from $50 for a child to $225 for the first adult and $100 for additional adults.

Houghtaling emphasized VillaSport’s a la carte, or “cafeteria-style,” membership approach, in which joiner fees and monthly dues vary based on the size of a family, the particular amenities members want or don’t want, and specials offered from time to time. He encouraged those wanting to see the club and learn about the pricing structure to come to the April 5 open house, which will feature considerable fanfare.

“The event will be pretty phenomenal,” he said. “We’ll have Radio Disney, with princesses roaming around, live music. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

VillaSport has two successful clubs in Colorado Springs, Colo., and The Woodlands, Texas, near Houston. Construction is set to begin on another club in Redwood City, Calif., and property has been purchased for a fifth location in Roseville, Calif.

Joseph Syufy, president and chief executive officer of VillaSport, said Beaverton was a logical place for the company to expand.

“Portland consistently ranks as one of the fittest cities in the nation, making it a natural location for us as we look to expand our offerings,” he said. “Beyond fitness, we want to be a part of the local community and a place for families to gather and socialize with their neighbors. It will be a place where fitness, family and community all come together.”

Phil Galvin, the Beaverton VillaSport’s general manager, said he sees the new club as providing amenities previously unavailable in the Beaverton-Hillsboro area.

“We’re beyond excited,” said Galvin, who served for 19 years at The Olympic Club in San Francisco before relocating to the Murrayhill neighborhood last year. “We have done our homework. We feel like we’re filling a need. This product is totally different (from nearby fitness clubs). This is a new type of club.”

Houghtaling, who headed the membership department at Leisure Sports Inc., which owns Club Sport Oregon in Tigard, for 14 years, admitted it’s a challenge to accurately describe what VillaSport is about until someone experiences it.

“It’s like trying to explain what it’s like to have a massage,” he said. “You just can’t do it until you have hands on you and it’s happening.”
