The fifth annual Booked for Success drive is underway to provide books for William Walker Elementary School's 500 students.

Organizers are raising money to buy book at the school's annual Book Fair, March 16 and 17. The drive is sponsored by the Central Beaverton Neighborhood Association with backing from Rotary of Beaverton.

The goal is to make sure that students at William Walker, a Title 1 Elementary School, are able to supplement their school lessons with recreational reading, which educators say is vital to developing literacy. Title 1 schools are those with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families.

In addition to a grant from the City of Beaverton and major donation from Rotary, funds will come from the neighborhood association's fund raising activities. These include direct donations, which may be made by sending a check to CBNAC, Neighborhood Program, PO Box 4755, Beaverton 97076.

People also can participate by eating at Pietro's Pizza, 13281 S.W. Canyon Road, on March 8, and telling the cashier you are there for CBNAC. A portion of proceeds will benefit the drive.

Sale of tickets to Beaverton Civic Theater's productions, available from CBNAC members, also benefits the drive.

The Book Fair is conducted by Scholastic magazine, which offers age-appropriate books for children.
