Voters should elect Bob Zahrowski for county commission

I solidly support Bob Zahrowski as the District 2 representative on the Washington County Board of Commissioners. Bob is a 33-year resident of the district, and he has actively supported improvements to the area as well as serving on different committees.

In his 28-year academic career at Portland State University and Oregon Institute of Technology, Bob taught courses to over 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students in subjects ranging from business law, business ethics, business strategies and other subjects. This school term, he is teaching three courses. Enrollment for his courses usually have ranged from 12 to 20 students.

Bob’s business consultant business has included a considerable amount of local, state and federal government consulting work to include work as an international consultant in Russia, Poland, Mexico and Colombia; work for the Portland Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration; work for the Tennessee Valley Authority; and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Strategic Plan. On the commercial/industrial side, Bob has had several consulting contracts with Pacific Power and Portland General Electric.

Regarding Bob’s opponent, Commissioner Greg Malinowski, I personally fault him for several lapses of ethical conduct in which he has, in scheduled board meetings voted for an issue, and then later talked publicly against the issue as if he had been against the issue for a long time.

I will cite one example here of this conduct: Commissioner Malinowski voted for Washington County, up front, paying for $2.3 million in road improvements by Springville Road in the North Bethany area, with the home builders in the area repaying the county for the improvements as they sell homes in the North Bethany area. After voting for this project, Commissioner Malinowski spoke publicly on several occasions against it and called it a giveaway and a sweetheart deal for one or more home builders.

I think District 2 needs a commissioner who has the moral and ethical conviction to stand by his position, and informs other board members of any change of heart that he has, which he did not do.

I urge you to vote for Bob Zahrowski for District 2 commissioner on May 20.

John Leeper is a Cedar Hills resident and former county commissioner.
