A versatile jack of all trades who could do everything from set, to hit on the outside, to block kills or dig out spikes, Southridge’s Nicole Rigoni was named the Metro League’s 2013 volleyball player of the year.

Rigoni — a University of Oregon commitment who was also selected to the 6A’s all-state squad — helped Southridge place second in the Metro League with a 7-3 record and was an integral piece of the Skyhawks’ highly competitive four-set loss to Jesuit. Southridge lost to Glencoe in a first- round five-set heartbreaker.

The 2013 Metro League champion Jesuit Crusaders led the conference with seven first-team all-Metro League selections. Senior defensive ace Cayla Nistler, junior outside hitter Elise Krippaehne, sophomore middle blocker Jasmine Gross, senior setter Jessica Finn, sophomore all-around player Nicole Peterson and junior outside hitter Symone Tran were each given first-team nods.

Jesuit only lost one set all season during Metro League competition, and finished third at the 6A state tournament in November after beating Roseburg in the consolation bracket. Nistler, Finn and Peterson were also picked to the 6A all-state second team.

Westview senior all-around player Hannah Lautenbach, Sunset junior setter Laurie Salness and Aloha senior defensive specialist Victoria Henry were likewise first-team all-Metro League picks.

Southridge put three players on the all-Metro League second team with senior outside hitter Bethany Kosmowski, junior setter Nica Loo, and junior defensive specialist Kelly McClean each garnering postseason accolades. Westview senior defensive specialist Jessica Huang and senior outside hitter Katrina Dubsky represented the Wildcats on the all-Metro League second team. Wildcat head coach Justin Denham was picked as the Metro’s coach of year after guiding a young Westview team to a fourth-place finish.

Sunset juniors Chanel Richardson (hitter/blocker) and Danielle Sterba (all around) were chosen to the all-Metro League second-team. Aloha sophomore outside hitter Ciara Lambert and junior setter Ellie Parker were also second-team.

Underclassmen ruled the all-Metro League third team as Jesuit outsider hitter Claire Zanon, Sunset’s outside hitter Emily Demots, and defensive specialist Reilly Schreck were nominated to the squad as freshmen. Sunset’s Christine Kim and Southridge’s Megan Martinson were third-team selections as sophomores as was Jesuit senior Melissa Flores and Beaverton senior Mady Crouse.
