The homeowners were on vacation and a passerby saw flames
Fire investigators said a passerby prevented a Milwaukie house fire from becoming much worse late Thursday night.
The man noticed smoke and flames coming from the back of a home at 5015 SE Aldercrest Road at 11:55 p.m. Thursday night. He called 911 and seeing a car in the driveway, tried to wake up anyone inside. When he got no response, he eventually beat down the door with a rock, but could not enter due to intense heat and flames. It was later discovered that the homeowner was on vacation.
Crews with Clackamas Fire District #1 responded to the fire and were able to enter and search the home for people. Finding none, they cut holes in the roof near the back of the home to combat the fire, which had spread into an attic space above the garage. While the home's structure was intact, the fire did cause significant damage to the ground floor and a portion of the roof collapsed.
Investigators are still searching for the cause of the fire. A cat died in the blaze.
