The Canby City Council invited Todd Rocha to join its ranks at its Wednesday, Sept. 18, meeting.

by: RAY HUGHEY - Todd Rocha has been tabbed to fill the empty Canby City Council slot after the interview process Wednesday night. The council appointed the construction project engineer by a 4-0 vote to fill the seat vacated by the July 17 resignation of Richard Ares. Councilors chose him over former councilor Jason Paden to serve the remainder of the term, which expires Dec. 31, 2014.

Rocha works as a project manager for BnK Construction Inc. in Gladstone. He also serves as civil service commissioner for the Canby Fire District and as an assistant coach for the Gladstone High School golf team

The vote was not unanimous. Councilor Greg Parker abstained. It wasn’t because he didn’t think Rocha would make a fine council member, he said.

“I just think we’ve gone from a council from where the reigning tenure was 27 years with Walt, to where its now 27 months and I’m the most tenured person as a councilor.

“And I think if we have an opportunity to bring somebody back who has some council experience, I think we should, so that’s where my vote would be. But I see how the votes are aligned, so I will just be an abstention here and look forward to working with Todd.”

Paden served on the Canby City Council 2009-11.

Parker also took issue with some of the questions directed at Rocha during his interview.

“Excuse me if my turkey feathers do get ruffled with Councilor Hensley and Councilor Rider seeming to give a litmus test on how he will vote on referring the library to voters. That kind of seems like lining up votes. Maybe that’s just me being oversensitive.”
