The Canby School District board of directors has named Samuel L. “Trip” Goodall as the district’s interim superintendent, effective July 1.

Goodall has been the director of high schools for Portland Public Schools since 2011.

Before that he was director of special programs four years and high school principal 10 years in the Deer Park (Wash.) School District. The Deer Park district is near Spokane and has 2,500 students.

“We started our search late in the school year, but even so, we had an excellent field of 18 candidates for our interim superintendent position. Trip Goodall emerged as the right choice to lead our district for the next 12 months,” said board Chairman Brendan Murphy.

Goodall and the board are working on a tentative agreement, which will be made official when the board meets June 26.

Goodall will succeed John Steach, whose term ends June 30. Steach, Canby superintendent since July 1, 2011, resigned to become deputy superintendent in the Evergreen School District in Vancouver, Wash.

Goodall holds a Master of Education in educational leadership and policy study from the University of Washington and a Bachelor or Arts in education from Evergreen State College.

He taught as an adjunct professor at Eastern Washington University and as an English and social studies teacher for seven years at Bainbridge High School, Bainbridge Island, Wash.

Goodall founded the Spokane Youth Lacrosse League and is an inductee in the Washington State Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

He served four years as chairman of the Washington State Special Education Advisory Council and received the 2007 Great Northern League Distinguished Principal Award.
