Samuel Goodall will helm the district as the search for a permanent superintendent continues

The Canby School District board of directors has named Samuel L. “Trip” Goodall as the district’s interim superintendent, effective July 1.

Goodall has been the director of high schools for Portland Public Schools since 2011.

Before that he was director of special programs four years and high school principal 10 years in the Deer Park (Wash.) School District. The Deer Park district is near Spokane and has 2,500 students.

“We started our search late in the school year, but even so, we had an excellent field of 18 candidates for our interim superintendent position. Trip Goodall emerged as the right choice to lead our district for the next 12 months,” said board Chairman Brendan Murphy.

Goodall and the board are working on a tentative agreement, which will be made official when the board meets June 26.

“I’ve only heard great things about the Canby School District and the Canby community,” Goodall said Thursday.

“I’m excited about having the opportunity to work with a real dedicated group of teachers, administrators, central office staff, board members and a community that believes in providing a quality education for students in Canby.”

Goodall has signed on as interim superintendent but also would be interested in the long-term job.

“Absolutely,” he said. “I’m interested in coming in and doing great work. I’ll let my work speak for itself.
