Canby United Methodist Church will offer the opportunity to learn Spanish and practice real conversation with Spanish-speaking people from the community this summer.

STOCK IMAGE - Canby United Methodist Church Season of Spanish classes will be held Mondays and Thursdays from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m., through Aug. 10, at the church, 1520 N. Holly St. in Canby.

Last November, the Rev. Karen Shimer was invited to a fundraising dinner for The Canby Center. Two empty places at the table where she was seated were given to the parents of one of the speakers, a woman whose life had been touched by the outreach of The Canby Center. They did not speak English and sat most of the evening in silence.

Shimer felt a longing to connect with these new friends but language kept her from doing so. She has felt the desire to learn Spanish and would like to offer the opportunity for others to learn to connect through learning the language and about the culture.

The lessons will include speaking to learn activities, vocabulary building ideas, reading, and cultural presentations such as dance, food and customs.

Cost if $50. Register at the office at 1520 N. Holly St. on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., or on the website at
