A temporary sign went up at Canby's one and only motel on Tuesday, Oct. 10, replacing the words "Canby Country Inn" with "Motel 6."
Jay Patel, who has owned the motel for 16 years said that he opted to franchise in hopes of gaining more business.
"Right now, consumers are technologically savvy and they want easy access, easy booking, things like that," Patel said. "So that will bring us more business."
Patel had been looking at several franchises and decided on Motel 6 because they have more locations than the others and because it guarantees the consumer that they will get the best price.
"A lot more people know the brand than any other brand," Patel said.
Over the course of the next year to two years, Patel will complete the property improvements that Motel 6 requires. Most of that work will take place inside the building and will include vinyl wood flooring and their signature orange accent walls.
Other than those physical changes and an increased online presence, Patel intends to do business the way he always has. The location will continue under his ownership and under the management of Bhadresh Patel and Nisha Patel (no relation to Jay).
Manager Nisha Patel said that she thinks the switch to Motel 6 is a good one, and she hopes it will bring more business.
Patel is excited about the change and eager to complete updates so that he can put up a permanent sign.
