More than 470 contestants will compete at the 56th-annual event over five nights starting Aug. 13.

by: MIKE COPEMAN / PRCA - Trevor Brazile, a 17-time world champion and arguably the face of professional rodeo today, is slated to compete Aug. 16 at the Canby Rodeo this year.By the end of this week, six defending world champions and dozens more former gold-buckle winners will have competed in their respective events at the 56th-annual Canby Rodeo at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds.

“That, matched with the finest stock, should get your blood pumping,” Canby Rodeo president Dave McDonald said.

Attracting some of the nation’s most talented cowboys and cowgirls for five nights (Aug. 13-17 at 7:30 p.m.), the local rodeo has become a landmark stop on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit.

More than 470 contestants are scheduled to compete at this year’s Canby Rodeo, which is part of the 107th-annual Clackamas County Fair. That’s up about 4% from last year’s total lineup.

Friday’s roster includes 17-time world champion Trevor Brazile and Canby High School alumnus Charly Crawford.

More than $130,000 in prize money was distributed to high-placing cowboys and cowgirls at last year’s rodeo. Among the biggest winners were bull rider Shane Proctor ($3,791), saddle bronc rider Joaquin Real ($3,574) and barrel racer Kelli Tolbert ($2,595). Other victorious contestants at the 2012 rodeo included all-around champion Bobby Mote, bareback rider Jason Havens, steer wrestler Kody Woodward, tie-down roper Cade Swor and team ropers Keven Daniel and Chase Tryan.

As has been the case for several years, the competitors will be matched with livestock from Red Bluff, Calif.-based Growney Brothers Rodeo Co. Tim O’Connor and Eric Layton will protect the cowboys as this year’s bullfighters.

Award-winning entertainer Keith Isley will serve as the clown and barrel man.

This year’s rodeo court will be led by Queen Courtney Hartman, a princess in 2012. She is joined by princesses Jackie Crosby and Mikala Staples.
