The Cougars also competed in the kick and hip-hop divisions, taking fourth place in each, but they were focused on winning the modern category for the second year in a row.

“The pressure was on to earn a back-to-back title,” coach Jennifer Chaffee said. “The team performed beautifully and, as we say on dance team, left it all on the floor.”

The routine was choreographed by James Healey.

Seven Canby dancers competed in the drill-down competition.

After a successful fall season, the Cougars will now shift gears and begin working on their state show routine. The program is hoping to qualify for the state championships after missing out by two-tenths of a point last year.

“Canby is becoming known as the team that does Modern, and this year will be no different,” Chaffee said.

Canby will perform at halftime of the Portland Trail Blazers game Jan. 8, and it will host its annual clinic for boys and girls Jan. 20.
