by: PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP / FILE - North Marion senior Andy Pine qualified for the OSAA state championships in the boys 50- and 100-yard freestyle events after posting runner-up finishes at the district meet.The North Marion swimming team earned state bids in nine events while posting two top-five finishes at the Special District 2 championships Feb. 14-15 at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

The boys tallied 148 points to take fourth place in a competition won by Madras (259), while the girls accrued 162 points to take fifth in a contest won by La Grande (211).

Coby Lemon captured a district title in the girls 100-yard butterfly race, finishing with a time of 1 minute 13.09 seconds to edge La Salle Prep runner-up Eileen Yee (1:14.38).

Lemon enters the OSAA championships, which will be held Feb. 21-22 at MHCC, as the 12th-seeded swimmer in the event.

Lemon also qualified for the state meet as a member of North Marion’s 400 freestyle relay squad, which clocked a 4:16.48 to place third at the district meet behind La Grande (3:51.03) and Valley Catholic (4:13.33).

Including four alternates, the ninth-seeded relay squad also features Jami Seevers, Katie Palmer, Veronica Norris, Grace Durst, Kayla Parkinson, Sami Pine and Victoria Suchanski.

Norris clinched state berths in two individual events. She holds the No. 7 seed in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.70, which was good for third place in the district finals, and she has the No. 8 seed in the 50 free after clocking a time of 26.33 seconds to take fourth at the district meet.

Andy Pine, who qualified for the state meet in both of his individual events, leads the Huskies’ contingent on the boys side.

He logged a 23.23 in the 50 free to take runner-up district honors behind La Grande sophomore Bryce Ebel (23.01), and he also took second in the 100 free with a 51.24. Madras junior Bryce Williams (51.05) won the district title. Pine is the third-seeded swimmer in both events at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A meet.

Fellow senior Kyle Torian punched a ticket to the OSAA championships in the 100 fly after taking fourth at the district meet with a 59.30. He is the sixth-seeded swimmer in the event.

Pine and Torian are also members of North Marion’s two state-qualifying relay teams on the boys side.

They joined senior Austin Dobaj and sophomore Noel Media to take third place in the 200 free relay with a 1:37.22 in a district race that featured four teams finishing within a second of each other. The same quartet clinched a state bid in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:41.51, which was good for third behind Madras and La Salle Prep at the district meet.

The Huskies’ alternates for the relay races are senior Nathan Jones, junior Wayne Guretzki, sophomore Cole Durst and freshman Sebastian Powers-Leach.
