Canby racers take first place
It was a brilliant display of racing prowess and athleticism for Canby junior Cole Thomas. At Lakeridge High School on Wednesday, Thomas started the varsity 5,000 meter race in the top spot and did not relinquish that spot. Thomas, Canby's top male runner this season, outran Lakeridge's Henry Potter by 12 seconds, pulling away on the final lap. Thomas finished with a time of 16 minutes 56.5 seconds (16:56.5).
The only other Canby representative in the top ten was senior Tristan Oakes, who had another solid showing as well, taking the third place spot with a time of 17:23.1. The boys took second place in the meet, outpointing Tigard but still losing to Lakeridge.
The Canby girls cross country team would claim five of the top 10 spots, and defeat Lakeridge and Tigard with the top score of 29. Sophomore Izabela Kacalek streaked past her competition, beating the second place finisher, Lakeridge freshman Holly Lane, by 20 seconds. Kacalek finished the 5,000 meter race with a time of 20:11.3, and led four other Cougars runners to top ten spots. Senior Ashley Ambrose finished in third place with a time of 21:52.2; junior Emma Rondeau took seventh place with 22:49.1; sophomore Emma Ulven ran 22:54.4 to take the eighth spot; and senior Marika Bierma rounded out the top ten with a time of 22:59.2.
The Canby cross country teams next compete on Saturday, Sept. 30 in Yakima, WA in the 44th Annual Sunfair Invitational.
