A Crook County female juvenile suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound Tuesday afternoon that authorities later learned was self-inflicted.
Personnel from the Crook County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident around 2:30 p.m. Deputies provided medical care to the victim until Crook County Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on scene. She was then transported to St. Charles Bend by air ambulance.
According to authorities, original reports on the incident indicated that the victim was shot by an unknown assailant. She reported that she didn't see any other people or vehicles in the area when she was shot.
Sheriff's Office personnel later learned that the victim had actually taken the firearm from her residence to familiarize herself with it and accidentally shot herself while trying to manipulate the gun. Authorities located the firearm and the shell casing that was used to shoot the victim.
The case was consequently closed and authorities report that the public is not in any danger. No criminal charges have been filed regarding the case at this time.
