Hillsboro man killed in crash north of Prineville
A Hillsboro man was killed after being thrown from his vehicle during a crash three miles north of Prineville Friday evening.
According to authorities, Crook County deputies responded to the crash on Northeast McKay Creek Road near Northwest Gerke Road around 9 p.m. The crash was reported by a motorist who found the unresponsive crash victim.
Upon arrival, deputies located a white 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup on its side with extensive damage. The driver, later identified as 58-year-old Gary Weingart, was located in a field north of the truck. He was already deceased.
An investigation determined that Weingart was driving southbound on McKay Creek Road north of the intersection with Gerke Road, when he failed to negotiate a curve. The truck left the roadway and started rolling, traveling approximately 500 feet before coming to rest on its side.
Weingart was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the truck as it rolled. He was determined to be the only occupant of the truck.
Authorities believe that alcohol and speed were both factors in the crash, and the investigation is ongoing.
The Crook County Sheriff's Office was assisted in this investigation by the Oregon State Police and the Crook County Medical Examiner's office.
