PMH accepting scholarship applications now

The deadline to apply is May 1

The Prineville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is accepting applications for its scholarship program, to be awarded on May 23.

Auxiliary President Marilyn Martinsen said that the three $1,000 scholarships will go to qualifying students obtaining or continuing their education in the medical field.

“Basically, applicants must be Crook County residents and enrolled in a Central Oregon school, or in a medical program at a school of higher education,” she explained, adding that the awardees must maintain a 3.0, or better, grade-point average.

Martinson said that the scholarships are the main focus of the auxiliary with funding for them coming from sales proceeds at the auxiliary gift shop, located at Pioneer Memorial Hospital.

“The scholarships are available to anyone looking to be in any type of medical field,” she said.

Applicants are asked to submit their high school transcript, a recent photograph, write a 500-word essay, acquire two letters of recommendation and include their family's financial statement.

“I encourage students to talk about themselves in their essay and what they have accomplished in school,” said Martinson, “They should also let us know how the scholarship will help them achieve their goals.”

Students awarded the scholarship may use the funds for tuition, books or direct school fees, with $500 awarded upon enrollment and the balance at the start of the second term, subsequent to submission of a current transcript.

The scholarship must be used by June 1, 2015 or the funds are subject to forfeiture.

Applications are available at the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, located inside the Elm Street entrance, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The deadline for applications is May 1, and the scholarships will be awarded no later than May 23. For more information call 541-447-6254.
