Crook County knocks off Hidden Valley in four sets

by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Karlee Hollis blasts a kill through a pair of Hidden Valley blockers during Crook County's semifinal victory over the Mustangs. The Crook County Cowgirls did just enough Friday night to survive and reach the OSAA Class 4A State Volleyball Championship.

Again, the Cowgirls lost the first set, then took a hard-fought 24-26, 25-9, 25-19, 25-16 four-set victory over the Hidden Valley Mustangs.

“We managed to play poor volleyball today and still win two matches,” Crook County Head Coach Rosie Honl said. “I’m just excited that we are in the championships. Maybe they’re saving it all for the championship against Cascade (a straight set winner over Sisters in the other semifinal match).”

Against Hidden Valley, the Cowgirls trailed 7-2 early in the first set, and never led in the set. Crook County finally tied 23-23. However, Hidden Valley scored three of the next four points to win the set.

The Cowgirls rolled out to a huge lead in the second set and cruised to the easy victory. After the easy win, it looked like Crook County was in control of the match. Although the Cowgirls never trailed again, Hidden Valley refused to quit. The third set was tied eight times before the Cowgirls were able to pull away late for the six-point win. Crook County calmly took care of business in the fourth set and closed the match out to reach their eighth-consecutive state championship.

Once again, Hannah Troutman led the Crook County attack with 23 kills. Karlee Hollis finished with 14 kills, while Kathryn Kaonis pitched in with 10.

Troutman and Aspen Christiansen each finished with 19 digs in the match. Troutman went 14 for 15 from the service line with an ace, Christiansen was 13 for 15 with an ace, and Hollis was 26 for 28 with 12 aces in the match.

Meanwhile, No. 1-ranked Cascade quickly dispatched Sisters 25-20, 25-22, 25-8 to earn a spot in Saturday night’s championship match against Crook County.
