Cowboys finish fifth at Reno TOC

Tyler Berger wins individual title at 110-team tournament

The Crook County Cowboys wrestling squad had their most impressive outing of the season, finishing fifth out of 110 teams at this past weekend’s Reno Tournament of Champions.

“There was much to be happy about,” said Head Coach Jake Huffman. “Much to be excited about, but still with a focus on just improving every day.”

The tournament, which featured teams from 16 states, including teams from as far away as New York and New Jersey, is billed as one of the top tournaments in the country each year.

“Everybody on the team contributed to our placing,” Huffman said. “All 14 of the kids we brought won at least one match. We showed that we can wrestle with anybody, not just in the state, but in the country.”

Poway, Calif. won the tournament, earning 211 points. Pleasant Grove, Utah took second with 196.5 points, followed by Centennial, Idaho (174), Mountain View, Ariz. (155.5), and Crook County (147.5). Rounding out the top 10 were Vacaville, Calif. (143), Pomona, Colo. (134), Maple Mountain, Ind. (129), Phillipsburg, N.J. (124.5), and Cibola, Calif. and Green Valley, Nev., who tied for 10th with 122 points.

The Cowboys might have finished even higher. Crook County had 14 wrestlers in the tournament, but in just 12 weight classes. Although they counted in the individual placing in each class where the Cowboys had more than one wrestler, the second wrestler did not count in the team scoring.

Tyler Berger was the highest finishing Cowboy in the tournament, going 6-0 and winning the 145-pound weight class.

“Tyler Berger is good, but when he gets to a tournament like this, there’s several just like him in his bracket,” Huffman said. “He beat the No. 2-ranked kid in his weight class in the country in the semifinals and he won in the finals against a very good kid from Poway.”

Curt Mode was the next highest finishing Cowboy, taking sixth place at 120 pounds. Mode finished the tournament with a 7-3 record, including a consolation win over Trayton Libolt, the Cowboy’s No. 1 wrestler in the weight class.

Ryder Shinkle, who like Mode did not count in the team scoring, placed seventh at 145 pounds with a 5-2 record.

Mode and Shinkle would have earned 35 points between them if they had counted in the team scoring.

“Mode and Shinkle had phenomenal tournaments,” Huffman said. “They wrestled very well, beating nationally-ranked kids and competing with the best of them. It was pretty exciting.”

Also finishing seventh for the Cowboys were Grayson Munn (6-2), and Jason Williams (4-2) at 132 and 285 pounds respectively.

Although they did not place, several other Cowboys had solid tournaments. Brendan Harkey finished with a 5-2 record at 160 pounds, while Clark Woodward was 4-2 at 170 pounds. Brent Bannon (126), Aaron Swindle (182), Trevor Rasmussen (220), and Libolt (120) all finished with 3-2 records.

Hayden Bates (138) and Gunnar Robirts (195) each finished with 2-2 records, while Trey Shores ended the tournament with a 1-2 record.

“We got a lot of matches — matches against national caliber kids,” Huffman said. “Winning some, losing some, building confidence, exposing weaknesses, doing all the things that we came to do. It’s a real test for them. There’s no rounds off. There’s no easy matches. I thought that they represented our community very well and they should all be proud of the way that they competed.”

The Cowboys are off until Jan. 3-4, when they travel to Nampa, Idaho to compete in another difficult regional tournament — the Rollie Lane Invitational.
