Cowgirls tie Lava Bears 70-70

Cowboys have strong showing in loss

The Crook County Cowgirls proved that they are a force to be reckoned with as they tied the Bend Lava Bears 70-70 in Intermountain Hybrid track and field.

“It went really good,” Crook County Head Coach Ernie Brooks said of Wednesday’s meet, which was held in Bend. “We had some great performances and personal records. We are just running through these early meets. We had a good, hard workout on Monday and then more of a field event type on Tuesday, but we still ran them and jumped them and put the grinders on them. It will pay off down the road.”by: PHOTO COURTESY OF DOUG SMITH - Audrey Bernard runs the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay for the Cowgirls. Crook County won the relay with a time of 53.31. Bend and Crook County tied 70-70 in the girls meet while Bend won the boys meet 90-55.

Although officially the score of the girls meet was tied, Brooks counted it as a win as Crook County won the non-scoring coed throwers relay, which was the last event of the day.

“I’m counting the relay as 2.5 points for the Cowgirls,” Brooks said. “Zach Smith anchored the throwers relay and he came back from probably 30 yards back. He kept battling and out-leaned the Bend guy to finish the meet. He caught him, but needed every inch of his 100 meters to chase him down and pass him.”

According to Brooks, the highlight of the girls meet was Elsa Harris. The CCHS tennis star took a break from tennis to run the 100 and 200 meter dashes, which she easily won in times of 13.18 and 27.43, respectively.

Madie Bernard, and Laken Berlin completed a sweep of the 100 for the Cowgirls, while Bernard also finished second in the 200.

Also winning events for the Cowgirls were Kathryn Kaonis (shot put), Hannah Troutman (javelin), and Berlin (long jump). The Cowgirls also sprinted to first place in the 4x100 relay with a season-best time of 53.31.

Although the Cowboys did not fare as well as the Cowgirls at the meet, losing 90-55, Brooks was still pleased with how the team competed.

“Our distance from about the 400 up was pretty rock solid today,” he said. “We put them in off events and lowered their distance down to work on speed.”

The big winner for the Crook County boys team was Smith. In addition to anchoring the winning coed throwers relay, he won the shot put (44-11), discus (118-11), and javelin (126-11).

Also winning an individual event for the Cowboys was Nathen Carmack, who took first in the 800 with a time of 2:02.51.

Crook County also took first in both relays with times of 45.49, and 3:36.98.

“A lot of our JV kids stepped up and came back with big PRs to challenge the varsity,” Brooks said. “That’s what we need. We need everyone pushing each other and climbing the ladder.”

Crook County is back in action today at the Aaron and Marie Jones Invitational, which will be held at McKenzie High School in Blue River. Field events are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. with running to follow.
