Cowboys roll to win over Bears

Lava Bears bring mixture of varsity and JV squad to dual at Crook County

The Crook County Cowboys' tennis squad earned its first win of the season Thursday afternoon, knocking off the Bend Lava Bears.

“We won every match,” said Crook County coach Aaron Raasch. “Which I was very happy with.”

With Crook County routinely having to forfeit matches because of a player shortage, the Lava Bears elected to bring a mixture of varsity and JV players to the dual.by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Pedro de Souza comes to the net to volley the ball as he defeats Bend's Sean Hebert 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match of the Cowboys' dual over Bend.

However, for the first time this year, the Cowboys won enough matches to earn a win despite a pair of forfeits.

The Cowboys were in control throughout the match as they earned a 6-2 victory.

Pedro de Souza took control early and rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sean Hebert at No. 1 singles. Jack Stubblefield, who missed the last match because of an illness, struggled early, but came back to take a hard-fought 7-5, 6-6 (7-2) win over Nick Campbell at No. 2 singles to keep things rolling for the Cowboys.

Garrett Harper continues to shine and rolled to an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over James Pon at No. 3 singles, while Cayden Quinn took the No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-3 over Matt Austin.

“Harper and de Souza have had two great matches in a row,” Raasch said. “I am very excited for their futures in this sport and this season.”

At No. 1 doubles, Brick Woodward and Leonard Pusl dropped the first set 7-5, then came roaring back to earn a 6-4 win in the second set, setting up a tiebreaker which they won 10-6.

“Our No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles fought hard to win their matches after losing the first few games,” Raasch said. “Which I believe shows a lot of character.”

Leandre Nicolai and Hayden Boyd closed things out for the Cowboys with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Eric Cullen and Cameron Keith at No. 2 doubles.

After playing a series of home matches, the Cowboys are on the road this week. The team takes on the Redmond Panthers today, then travel to Redmond again on Thursday to take on the Ridgeview Ravens. Both matches are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
