Cowboys take second at Black Butte

Mayson Tibbs places fourth overall to lead Crook County

Mayson Tibbs fired a five-over-par 77 to lead the Crook County Cowboys to a second-place finish at the seven-team Sisters Invitational.

Tibbs placed fourth overall as the Cowboys fired a round of 334 at the tournament, held Thursday at Black Butte Ranch.

“It was one of our better scores of the year,” said Crook County Head Coach Zach Lampert. “They had a good time. We enjoyed the golf course and I think we will just keep building confidence. When you see that you are getting second place in a tournament with a mix of 4 and 5A schools I think that’s good.”

Although Tibbs was just two shots off the lead, he could have scored even better. The freshman had four birdies and seven pars in his round. However, a pair of double bogies cost him a chance at tournament medalist honors.

A trio of Bend golfers earned medalist honors as Ryan DeCastilhos, Sam Nielsen and Jack Klar tied for first place with three-over-par rounds of 75.

With Lava Bear golfers taking the three first places in the tournament, Bend walked away with the team title. The Lava Bears posted a round of 307 to finish 27 shots ahead of second-place Crook County.

Mountain View finished third with a round of 339. They were followed by Ridgeview (365), Redmond (381) and Sisters (450). La Pine also competed in the tournament, but failed to field a complete team.

In addition to Tibbs, Cabe Goehring and Josh Christian also had solid rounds for the Cowboys, posting identical rounds of 85. Close on their heels was Kody Kuk with a score of 87. The final Crook County golfer in the tournament was Daniel Ego who was playing the first varsity round of his career. Ego had a respectable 49 on the front nine, then struggled to a 54 on the back nine for a 103 total.

The Cowboys played at Tetherow Golf Links on Monday on what Lampert described as one of the toughest courses in Central Oregon.

“That’s a hard course,”?he said. “It’s just different. It’s a links-style golf course where if you land it on the green it rolls off the back. You have to land it short and play the contour of the hole. It makes you think.”

Because of the difficulty of the course, the Cowboys played a practice round on the course Friday afternoon.

The tournament will be the biggest tournament so far this year with teams expected to come from all over the state to compete.

The Cowboy golfters will be back in action on Friday when they take on Juniper Golf Club at the Redmond Invitational. Tee times are scheduled to begin at noon.
