Sappington wins girls all-around

Weather not a factor as local rodeo competitors finish strong at Tri-County Rodeo


Rain and cold didn’t dampen spirits Saturday as Crook County athletes had strong performances at the annual Tri-County Rodeo, held at the Crook County Fairgrounds.

Locals continued to shine Sunday as both the weather and times improved. by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Bailey Beall wins the first go round of breakaway roping at the Tri-County Rodeo, which was held in Prineville on Saturday and Sunday. Beall had a time of 3.37 seconds on the run.

Riley Rae Sappington led the way for local athletes as she won the girls' all-around title at the rodeo. Sappington won Sunday performances in both breakaway roping (3.40) and goat tying (8.21) to increase her all-around lead in the Oregon High School Rodeo Association season standings. Sappington also placed 11th in barrel racing on Sunday with a time of 18.272. Although she did not win any events on Saturday, Sappington still had a solid day, finishing second in goat tying, third in team roping, fifth in barrel racing, and 11th in breakaway roping.

Several other Crook County athletes also had solid performances at the rodeo. Bailey Beall won the first go round of breakaway roping with a time of 3.37 seconds, while Brent Bannon won the first go round of bareback riding with a score of 61. Bannon was also second in the event during Sunday’s second go round despite having a score of just 57.

Friday afternoon, Beall earned a second and a third as both go rounds of girls cutting were held on the same day. Talia Radabaugh kept pace, also earning a second and a third in the event. Kimmer Severance also placed in cutting, taking sixth in both go rounds.

Beall, who is fourth in the current all-around standings, finished third in the second go round of goat tying and 10th in the first go round. Severance, who is also in contention for the all-around championship, finished third in the first go round of goat tying. Severance also placed fifth and ninth in pole bending.

Miranda Mosby, who is second behind Sappington in the goat tying season standings, struggled in the first go round, failing to get a time. However, she came back to finish sixth on Sunday.

Although Bannon was the only Crook County cowboy to win an event at the rodeo, several other local cowboys did also place.

James Beatty continued his steady season in steer wrestling, finishing fifth in both go rounds of the event.

Christopher Lopez and roping partner Tim Thomas finished ninth in the first go round of team roping. The duo improved to third in the second go round with a time of 7.18 seconds. Austin Severance and Ryder Shinkle, who had no time in the first go round of team roping, came back to finish second on Sunday with a time of 6.77 seconds. Chad Forrester and Gavin Stafford also had a solid run in the second go round, finishing fifth with a time of 7.80, while Austin Madsen and Maria Millard finished eighth with a time of 14.8.by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Brent Bannon strains to finish his bareback ride on Saturday. The high school rodeo season is rapidly winding down with just one rodeo remaining prior to the state finals, which will be held in Prineville June 11-14.

Athletes will compete in Burns this coming weekend before having nearly a month off prior to the state finals. The top four finishers in the final standings in each event are eligible for the High School National Finals Rodeo, be held July 13-19 in Rock Springs, Wyo., while competitors who finish in fifth through ninth place are eligible to participate in the Silver State International Rodeo, held June 30 to July 5 in Winnemucca, Nev.
