Ovens to play at softball College of the Siskiyous

Crook County High School graduate to play infield for the Eagles


Crook County High School graduate Jena Ovens recently signed a letter of intent to play softball at College of the Siskiyous.

“I have dreamed of playing college softball ever since I was little,” Ovens said. “I am so blessed with the opportunity I have been given.”

Ovens, a shortstop, led the Intermountain Conference in hitting her senior year with a .622 batting average. Ovens, a four-year starter for the Cowgirls, recently signed a letter of intent to play softball at College of the Siskiyous in Weed, Calif.slugging percentage of 1.022 and an on-base percentage of .640. She also led the league in home runs with seven and added seven doubles and four triples. In addition she stole 25 bases in just 28 attempts.

Ovens was named first team IMC, and to the All-State second team.

“I have so many people to thank for getting me to where I am,” she said. “Jessica Cross, Jon Tabackman, Reggie Holcomb, Troy Waite and Mic Bowman to name a few coaches that deserve a world of thanks. Also thank future coach John Cox for giving me this amazing opportunity.”

Ovens plans to pursue a degree in biology.

The college, which is located in Weed, Calif. has historically been one of the top junior college softball programs in the nation. The team has won five conference championships and competed in the final four state championship for five of the last six years.

During that time the program has the top winning percentage of all California Junior Colleges.

During that stretch, the program has sent more than thirty athletes on to play at four-year colleges with full or partial scholarships while compiling a 214-52 record.

However, the team struggled early last season and finished with a disappointing 14-25 record.
