Swimmers take third again

High Desert Swim Team of Burns wins home meet, Lakeview second

Despite a strong performance from the team’s top performers, the Prineville Swim Team finished third at the High Desert Invitational, held July 18-20 in Burns.

“The kids did amazing this weekend,” Head Coach Raquel Swain said. “We had a lot of firsts and thirds. I’m very proud of them. We beat the smoke and heat.”

The host High Desert Swim Team outlasted a strong Lakeview Swim Team to win the invitational. High Desert finished with 1,032 points while Lakeview posted a score of 968.

Prineville Swim Team was a distant third with 792 points, while John Day Swim Team trailed the field with 569 points.

Although the Prineville Swim Team had 15 swimmers score 20 points or more, it wasn’t enough as the team lacked the depth to compete with teams from Burns and Lakeview who have more swimmers.by: PHOTO COURTESY OF ALLIE THURMAN - Garrett McMichael takes second in the boys 13-14 100 breast stroke. McMichael scored 41 points for the Prineville Swim Team at the High Desert Invitational despite moving up from the 11-12 year-old age group.

On the girls side of the meet, Teagan Freeman and Kami Ackley had outstanding meets. Freeman, 10, won four individual events and took second in two more as she racked up 55 points. Ackley was nearly as strong, taking three firsts and three seconds in the 8U age group en route to 54 points.

Also having a strong meets for the girls was Emma Hehn, who won the girls 13-14 200 free en route to amassing 46 points. Cora White picked up wins in the girls 15-18 200 free and 100 breast strokes while scoring 43 points, and Abby Curtis won the girls 15-18 100 butterfly and scored 38 points.

Also having a solid meet for the girls was Avery Chamness. The 7 year-old failed to win a race, but still scored 24 points.

After finishing second on the team in his age group a week earlier, Bailey Parrott had an outstanding meet to lead the boys. Parrott won five races in the15-18 division, and took second in a sixth, as he scored 58 points in the meet.

Michael Burleigh, 13, won just one race, the boys 13-18 400 free, but still scored 41 points. Garrett McMichael also scored 41 points while also winning just one race, the 13-14 200 freestyle.

What made McMichael’s accomplishment especially noteworthy was that it was his first time competing in that age division. Previously he had competed in the 11-12 year-old group.

“Garrett aged up on Thursday (had a birthday),” said Swain. “But it did not seem to bother him a bit. He finished in the top five of every one of his events even though this move doubles all the meters he would swim. Instead of 50 meters all the events are 100 meters.”

Also having strong performances were Cody Thurman, 17, who won one race and scored 37 points, and Thomas Burleigh, 13, who didn’t win a race but still scored 33 points. Jacob Hehn, 16, also scored 33 points without winning a race, while Carson Raymond won the boys 15-18 freestyle en route to 31 points in the meet.

The final two Prineville swimmers to score at least 20 points were Colin White, 13, who finished with 29 points, and Carson Chamness, 12, who finished with 20 points.

The swim team is back in action this weekend when they travel to John Day. The season ends the following week when the Cascade East District Championships are held back in Burns, Aug. 1-3.by: PHOTO COURTESY OF ALLIE THURMAN - Cora White races towards the finish line of the 50-meter breast stroke during the High Desert Invitational Swim Meet. White won the girls 15-18 age group in the event with a time of 1:38.60.

If this past weekend’s results are any indication, the district championship should be a two-team dog fight with Lakeview and Burns, who have traded wins so far this year, slugging it out for first.

Although the Prineville Swim Team doesn’t seem to have enough depth to challenge for a championship, they may still impact who finally wins.

“We had several kids step up with some amazing swims,” Parrott said. “The kids I have are strong solid swimmers. They work hard and I expect them to out-perform in their individual events.”
