Mat club members also have a good weekend at Oregon Classic Wrestling Tournament

LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Chance Yancey works to pin an opponent at a match earlier this year. Yancey was one of eight Cowboy Mat Club wrestlers to recently win state championships. The Cowboy Mat Club has repeatedly shown that they are one of the top youth wrestling programs in Oregon.

Recently, that prowess has been on display as mat club members had outstanding tournaments at the Oregon Classic Wrestling Tournament and the Oregon Kids State Wrestling Championships.

The Cowboy Mat Club had 18 placers at the Oregon Classic Wrestling Tournament, including three individual champions. Ten other mat club members won at least one match at the tournament, which was held in Redmond Jan. 13-14.

The club was even stronger at the state championships as 23 team members placed, including eight individual champions. All told, 38 of the team's 48 entered wrestlers won at least one match in the tournament, which was held Jan. 20-21 also in Redmond.

In the Oregon Wrestling Classic, Maylee Yancey took first in the intermediate girls 67-pound weight class, while MacKenzie Shearan was first in the novice girls 86-pound weight class. Jaidyn Hammack was the final Cowboy Mat Club individual champion, taking first in the cadet girls 152-pound division.

Three other Cowgirls placed in the tournament, led by a third-place finish by Paisley Cordiner in the intermediate 63-pound weight class. Gretchen Fewell finished fifth in the intermediate 59-pound class, while Chalis Buechert was eighth in the schoolgirl 92-pound weight class.

Two Cowboy mat club members finished second in the tournament as Tevarii Pennington was runner-up in the bantam 55-66-pound class and Wyatt Neatherey was runner-up in the bantam 70-pound division.

Other Cowboy Mat Club placers included Robert Lacey (third novice 86), Brayden Duke (third schoolboy 130), Gavin McLean (third schoolboy 149), Tucker Bonner (third cadet 94), Haydn Hilderbrand (third cadet 220), Wyatt Wood (fourth cadet 106), Chance Yancey (fourth Intermediate 63), Landon Lavey (fourth novice 82), Bentley Halsey (fifth bantam 85), and Elijah Cassidy (sixth schoolboy 97).

Other mat club members to win at least one match at the tournament included Kaiden Raynolds (bantam 49), Wyatt Luna (bantam 53), Tyson Halsey (bantam 56), Dayton Wilkinson (bantam 62), Chase Hemphill (intermediate 56), Landon Lockling (intermediate 71), Daxson Pennington (intermediate 77), Mason Lacey (novice 74), and Cash Wells (schoolboy 83).

The Cowboy Mat Club looked even stronger two weeks later at the state championships.

Highlighting the weekend for the mat club were championships by the brother and sister duo of Chance and Maylee Yancey.

It was the second consecutive weight class championship for Maylee, who took the intermediate girls 67-pound title. Chance, who had been fourth at the Oregon Classic, rolled through the state championships en route to a title in the intermediate 63-pound class.

Maylee Yancey wasn't the only mat club member to win a second championship as Shearon once again won the novice girls 86-pound class.

Other Cowboy Mat Club state champions included Cruz Evans (pee wee 50), Robert Lacey (novice 86), Brayden Duke (schoolboy 130), Casen Villastrigo (iIntermediate 49), Tucker Bonner (cadet 88), and Haydn Hilderbrand (cadet 195).

Second-place finishes for the mat club went to Chase Hemphill (intermediate 56), Cash Wells (schoolboy 83), Gavin McLean (schoolboy 149), and Gretchen Fewell (intermediate girls 59).

Placing third for the mat club were Weston Bowles (pee wee 45), Landon Lavey (novice 82), Wyatt Wood (cadet 106), and Tevarii Pennington (intermediate girls 56).

Other mat club members to place in the event included Thayne Grant (fourth bantam 49), Daxson Pennington (fourth intermediate 77), Dylan Lee (fourth schoolboy 106), Benjamin Sather (fourth cadet 152), Justin Tucker (fifth bantam 45), and Paisley Cordiners (fifth intermediate girls 67).

Other mat club members to win at least one match in the tournament were Jimmie Fewell (bantam 49), Wyatt Luna (bantam 53), Tyson Halsey (bantam 56), Rowdy Ware (intermediate 56), Brodie Nash (intermediate 67), Wyatt Neatherey (intermediate 67), Lucky Wood (novice 67), Mason Lacey (novice 74), Preston Duke (novice 98), Ross McKinney (schoolboy 90), Kyree Willis (schoolboy 97), Mitch Warren (schoolboy 97), Jesse Wood (schoolboy 114), Gage Hanson (schoolboy 125), and Collier Buffington (schoolboy 125).
