Cowboys defeat Rangers, Indians
After an emotional senior night on Wednesday, the Crook County Cowboys didn't wrestle their best on Thursday in Madras, but it didn't matter as Crook County rolled past Estacada and Molalla in a pair of Tri-Valley Conference dual meets.
"We came out pretty flat," Crook County head coach Jake Huffman said. "I mean, I get it, we've been training really hard, and we came off an exciting win against Redmond on senior night at home in kind of a big event. Still, I just felt like we came out a little flat. Maybe we didn't prepare the way that we should have. Maybe we overlooked a few people. We can't do that again."
If the Cowboys overlooked the Rangers, then other opponents better look out. With Pacer Quire gone on a family matter, the Cowboys forfeited the 126-pound match, spotting the Rangers six points, nonetheless, Crook County rolled to a 54-21 win.
Crook County had already wrestled Molalla once previously, and Thursday night, the Indians chose to not utilize their entire lineup. Molalla forfeited six of the first seven matches, but it wouldn't have mattered as Crook County blanked the Indians 78-0.
The only thing preventing the Cowboys from getting a perfect score was the fact that both teams forfeited at 126 pounds.
Crook County jumped out to a 112-0 lead in the first dual of the night as Colton Burkhardt pinned Estacada's Taylor Patterson 1:12 into their match before Kyle Knudtson picked up a forfeit victory at 170 pounds.
However, the lead was short-lived.
The Rangers came roaring back as Draco Yandell surprised No. 4 ranked Jaxson Rhoden, pinning him early in the second round.
When Kenny Clark outpointed Crook County's Garrett Bond 11-9 at 195 pounds, the Rangers trailed just 12-9.
Mario Hansen started things rolling again for the Cowboys with a 5-0 victory over Michael Gamble at 220 pounds. Then Caleb Parrott (285), Hunter Mode (106) and Tannon Joyner (113) each picked up first-round pins as the Cowboys rolled to a 33-9 lead.
When Trevor Martin picked up a forfeit win at 120 pounds, the Cowboys held an insurmountable 39-9 lead.
Crook County's forfeit at 126 pounds briefly gave the Rangers life, but any hopes that they might have had of making a comeback were quickly dashed when Zachary Mauras picked up a fall over Caleb Brotnov in the third round of what had been an exciting 132-pound match. Mauras had led 4-1 after one round and 8-5 after two.
A first-round fall by Cole Morgan (132) over Cody Hovda and a major decision by Tyler Fioravanti (145) over Sam Garrison extended the Cowboy lead to 54-15.
Although it didn't change the outcome, the match ended on a low note for the Cowboys when Justin Drury pinned Turner Austin midway through the second round of their 152-pound match, giving the Rangers their fourth win of the match.
Still, it was a dominant win by the Cowboys over the second-best team in the Tri-Valley Conference.
The Molalla match went by quickly as the Cowboys picked up forfeits in six of the first seven matches, starting with a forfeit win by Knudtson at 170 pounds.
In the only match over 170 pounds that was contested in the dual, Rhoden earned a fall over Bo Edwards just 44 seconds into their 182-pound match.
Bond (195), Hansen (220), Parrott (285), Mode (106) and Joyner (113) then picked up consecutive victories by forfeit, making the score 48-0.
Martin made the Cowboy lead 54-0 with a first-round pin of Dylan Dickson at 120 pounds.
After both teams forfeited at 126 pounds, the Cowboys cruised through the final five matches of the night as Mauras (126), Morgan (132), Fioravanti (145), Austin (152) and Burkhardt (160) all won by fall.
"I think last night was a dual for our seniors," Mauras said. "That was fun, getting an extra match under our belt, that and getting in different positions than we normally do — working on our skills. Today was just getting a few more matches, preparing a little bit more and sharpen the tool a little bit so we are ready to go at regionals."
Austin, one of just four Cowboy seniors to wrestle on Thursday, was excited to finish the regular season with a win.
"It was pretty good," he said. "I'm glad that I get to top it all off with a win in the regular season. With Estacada, I feel like we could have done a little bit better, but with Molalla, we got it fine-tuned."
The regional tournament will be held in Molalla Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for the state tournament, which will be held the following weekend at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
"We've got to get ready to go," Huffman said. "We are just going to try to have a short memory and have a great next few days of training. I think we need a weekend of rest. I know our legs are shot. We've been training hard, but I think we're going to be ready to go when we need to be ready to go. The goal is to have our best wrestling in February, and I think that's still the plan."
