Members of Milwaukie’s Community Emergency Response Team spent two hours Saturday, Jan. 11, checking and repairing cots from the Red Cross’s supplies trailer.

By drilling out the affected frames, the team was able to assure that all the cots were in working order. Every cot was checked and repackaged with help from American Legion Post 180, a Red Cross Shelter Team and other disaster-services volunteers.

“The drill was very effective as both a team-building exercise and a test of organizational ability,” said Linda Hedges, a Milwaukie CERT member who served as the team coordinator.

Milwaukie CERT members have two opportunities each month to participate in exercises, and the next Basic CERT training is scheduled to begin Feb. 5. Training focuses on increasing the level of safety for those who will be stepping forward to assist overwhelmed emergency personnel after a disaster. Free classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. over five Wednesday evenings through March 12 at the American Legion, 2146 S.E. Monroe St., Milwaukie.
