John Baker is looking for a few good voices — actually, he is looking for quite a few good voices in the North Clackamas area.

by: FILE PHOTO - BakerBaker was the choir director at Rex Putnam High School for many years, and retired three years ago. At his retirement party, 150 of his past students came together, created their own choir and sang their hearts out.

He would like to recreate that moment again, so he is putting together the North Clackamas Community Choir, starting on Feb. 24. Rehearsals will take place on Monday nights, culminating in a concert on May 12.

All community members, age 18 and older, are welcome to join the choir. He is expecting to see many of his former students, who already know how to read music, but is not planning to turn anyone away.

“Our goal is to have fun and rekindle relationships and start new ones,” Baker said.

He added that he misses teaching and having his own choir, so Baker feels this community choir will fill the void, and give him a sense of purpose.

And he will have “the best accompanist in the world,” his own daughter, Alicia Baker, who graduated from RPHS in 2013.

“This choir will consist of special people who will be fun to spend every week with. I want to foster community joy,” Baker said.

Anyone interested in joining the choir is encouraged to email him at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., visit his website at, or call him at 503-654-3790. The fee to join the choir is $75.

Monday night rehearsals will be held in the RPHS Choir Room, at Rex Putnam High School, 4950 S.E. Roethe Road, in Milwaukie, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 24, Mar. 10, 17, 31, April 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5 and 12.
