Ten percent of all cake sales through the Gladstone Baskin-Robbins will benefit the Doernbecher Foundation from April 1 until May 31.

With a match from Alpenrose, store owner Steve Leitz expects to raise about $30,000. To kick off the drive Monday, March 24, participating store owners will serve a free scoop to patients who are able to eat ice cream. They will be back at the children’s hospital in June to present their donation.

April 22 through 24 is Scoop Fest when ice cream scoops will be just $1. Leitz expects “a huge party” like last year when the Gladstone Fire Department and the Gladstone High School Band helped scoop ice cream and held fundraisers. There also will be a Mexican band and dancers performing.

Leitz says that Doernbecher made sense to benefit because it is directly helping kids who often come into Baskin-Robbins stores. Baskin-Robbins employees are also required to do two hours of paid community service.

“We’re trying to promote good citizenship, so Doernbecher fell right in, and we hope that this is an annual event,” Leitz said.
