Former Gov. Roberts relates to rising rents

She stretches her income to help one of her sons cope with increases amounting to 50 percent in 18 months on a Portland apartment.

Former Gov. Barbara Roberts confirms she is stretching her pension income to help one of her sons cope with his rising rent, which she says has jumped by 50 percent in the past 18 months.

"If I was not here, I do not know where he would be," Roberts told the Portland Tribune.

Roberts spoke Thursday (March 9), a week after state Rep. Karin Power, D-Milwaukie, described her situation while speaking on behalf of a bill to bar most no-cause evictions. Power is one of four chief sponsors of House Bill 2004, which also would repeal a state ban on cities and counties from controlling rents.

Power's district covers part of Southeast Portland, where Barbara Roberts lives.
