Between Thanksgiving and Dec. 11, Clackamas community fire stations accept nonperishable foods and new, unwrapped toys

The sleigh bells from Operation Santa Claus have been ringing for the citizens of Clackamas Fire District #1 since 1974.

Santa is the highlight of Clackamas Fire's Operation Santa program.Operation Santa Claus was formed after firefighters recognized the need to provide toys and food baskets to families and individuals who were less fortunate and not likely to experience the joys of the holiday season.

During the monthlong holiday toy and food drive, fire district volunteers and employees lead Santa's fire engine parade down neighborhood streets. Between 6 and 9 p.m. Nov. 24-Dec. 10 the parade collects toys and nonperishable food items to fill hundreds of baskets for needy families. Operation Santa Claus is funded solely by donations from community members. The Clackamas Emergency Services Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization associated with Clackamas Fire District #1. The foundation is a tax-exempt organization formed under 501 (C)(3). Donations allow the fire district to fill the voids in assuring a balanced and respectable holiday gift basket.

Give to Operation Santa Claus by sending checks to the Clackamas Emergency Service Foundation at 11300 S.E. Fuller Road, Milwaukie, OR 97222. Operation Santa does not solicit funds over the phone. Donated funds are used to purchase perishable items for food baskets and to help cover miscellaneous expenses.

Operation Santa doesn't accept requests for assistance via telephone, message line or by community fire station personnel. Operation Santa receives names of recipients from Compassion in Action/Clackamas County (CIACC).

CIACC serves as a coordinating agency for many Clackamas County holiday drives to assure that most people can be served. Direct application can be made in person at Clackamas Fire's Administration Office on Fuller Road in unincorporated Milwaukie, or at the Boring Community Fire Station #14, 28655 S.E. Highway 212.

Clackamas Fire officials extended a special thanks this year to Operation Santa business partner Pacific Seafood for donating the warehouse space where the donations will be stored and sorted for distribution to families.
