Designed to be as realistic as possible, trainers didn't reveal details of the scenario that participants encountered. Volunteers acted as victims, also to help increase the realism of the drill.

In a training scenario that took place at Concord Elementary in Milwaukie, firefighters and police officers responded to a call for shots fired at the school, said Clackamas Fire spoksman Dave Doornink. Law enforcement officers secured the scene and neutralized the threat while Clackamas firefighter/paramedics worked with them to remove injured victims and provide life-saving care immediately.

"Training like this is incredibly valuable as it gives firefighters and police officers an opportunity to work together in a learning environment," Doornink said.

The active-shooter training will continue through the end of this week.
