The veteran running back runs for 312 yards and five touchdowns in wins over Grants Pass and Newberg
Clackamas High Schools football team is off to a great start this fall, posting preseason wins over Grants Pass (42-23) and Newberg (29-28) in its first two games.
Dan Sherrell has been huge for the Cavaliers in the two games. The 5-9, 170-pound senior running back has 312 yards rushing in the two games.
Sherrell carried 28 times for 145 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Grants Pass. He returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and rushed 18 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns in last Fridays narrow win at Newberg.
Clackamas senior quarterbacks Doonie Johnson and Cade Wilkins have been no less impressive. For the first two games, Johnson has competed 18-of-25 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown. He was 11-of-12 passing in the Cavaliers season opener.
Wilkins completed 4-of-6 passes for 78 yards at Newberg, and he passed for a touchdown against Grants Pass.
The Newberg game was a battle. The first quarter ended in a 14-14 standoff, with Clackamas scoring on Sherrells kickoff return and on a 48-yard pass from Wilkins to Brody Haehlen.
Veteran kicker Michael McDonald split the uprights for a 31-yard field goal in the second period to give Clackamas a 17-14 lead at the intermission.
Newberg finished the third quarter up 28-23, answering a 25-yard touchdown run by Sherrell with a pair of scores.
Clackamas winning touchdown came with 11:25 to play, when Sherrell capped off a five-play, 63-yard drive with an 18-yard romp to paydirt. Backup running back Dalon Hudson had two huge carries of 18 and 21 yards in the drive.
The Cavaliers then played super tough defense down the stretch to hang on for the 29-28 victory.
Clackamas 6-1, 195-pound senior linebacker Zach Farnes had a huge defensive game, making 13 tackles. Senior lineman David Reese and junior lineman Kyle Anderegg had nine tackles apiece.
The Cavaliers (2-0) have two more games to close out their preseason. They entertain Aloha (1-1) this Friday and they play Reynolds (0-2) at Mt. Hood Community College on Friday, Sept. 20.
Aloha got thumped by Tigard 56-7 last Friday, after dropping Thurston 37-34 in its season opener.
Clackamas hosts Lakeridge (2-0) on Sept. 27 in its Three Rivers League opener.
