But three forfeits lead to defeat

The Rex Putnam Kingsmen were impressive in last week’s dual meet with St. Helens, outscoring the visiting Lions 38-21 in matches contested on the mat.

But the effort proved to no avail as three Putnam forfeits proved costly in a 39-38 dual loss.

The Kingsmen won seven of the 11 matches actually wrestled, five of them by fall and the two others by major decision.

Sophomore Ammon Rial (145) and junior Juan Hernandez were all business for the Kingsmen. It took Rial just 1:06 to dispatch with St. Helens sophomore Brandon Cupp; Hernandez pinned freshman Miguel Olmedo in 1:25.

Also recording falls for the Kingsmen were: freshman Kane Hernandez (106), over sophomore John Dewitt; junior Nick Urben (160), over freshman Garrett Kust; and junior Doug Fry (195), over sophomore James Poland.

Putnam sophomore Brice McDonald (120) handled freshman Colton Beisley, winning by 15-4 major decision; and junior Jeff D’Auvergne was dominant at 220, winning by 13-2 major decision over St. Helens freshman Colton Albertson.

The win left St. Helens (3-0) all alone atop the Northwest Oregon Conference standings, while the Kingsmen slipped to 0-3 with the loss.

Putnam meets NWOC powerhouse Sandy (2-0) on the road this evening; the Kingsmen entertain Sherwood (2-0) on Thursday, Jan. 30.
