Traver and sister Chelsi Brewer make waves at Whitman

The local girls light them up from downtown

by: COURTESY WHITMAN COLLEGE - TIFFANI TRAVEROregon City sisters Tiffani Traver (formerly Tiffani Brewer) and Chelsi Brewer were part of school history at Whitman College during the past season as they helped lead the Missionaries to the national championship game in NCAA Division III womens basketball.

The Missionaries in 2013-14 had their best season in school history, going 31-2, losing only to Whitworth (68-65) in the Northwest Conference championship game and to Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham (80-72) in the national final.

A 2010 graduate of Oregon City High School, Traver was a part of an Oregon City High School girls basketball team that won a state title in 2009. Brewer graduated from Oregon City a year ago, playing for a Pioneer team that finished third her senior year.

A 5-8 guard, Traver has been the Missionaries’ go-to outside shooter the past two seasons, leading the team in three-pointers both as a junior and a senior.

Playing in all 33 games and averaging just under 31 minutes of playing time a game, Traver this past season averaged 10.3 points on .441 shooting from the field and .746 shooting from the free throw line. She connected at a .409 clip from 3-point land, making 76-of-186 attempts. She also had 90 assists.

Traver also made 38 3-pointers her junior season at Whitman.

Whitman made the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever a year ago, advancing to the elite 8.

Traver, who was team co-captain this year, has been a four-year starter at shooting guard for the Missionaries.

by: COURTESY WHITMAN COLLEGE - CHELSI BREWERFollowing in her older sisters’ footsteps, Brewer, a 5-9 guard, this season averaged 10 minutes of playing time per game, taking to the floor in Traver’s position when her sister needed a breather.

“Chelsi was able to come in as a freshman and make an impact with the seniors who recognized she was a lock-down perimeter defender and a sharp shooter from the 3-point line,” said the girls’ father, Marshall Brewer. “They called her ‘little Tiffani.’”

Traver has been selected to play for the USA Division III National Team. She will be traveling to Brazil with the team in July, according to Marshall Brewer.

When she returns from Brazil, Traver will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she has been selected to teach high school math in the Teach For American program.
