Milwaukie's baseball team met a powerhouse in Sandy last week and got swept by the Pioneers, 13-3, 15-1 and 12-2.

But the Mustangs are improving. They had 17 hits in the three games.

Randall Sam had two doubles and two RBI in the 13-3 loss. Led by freshman right-fielder Cole Roberts (3-for-4, double), the Mustangs only struck out twice in the 15-1 loss.

“We're putting the ball in play,” said Milwaukie coach Phil Marchant. “Small steps, but we're getting better.”

The three wins left Sandy (12-8, 9-3) second only two Sherwood (14-6, 11-1) in the eight-team Northwest Oregon Conference.

Milwaukie (6-14, 3-9) meets cross-town rival Putnam (12-8, 8-4) this week, playing at Putnam this afternoon and entertaining the Kingsmen on Friday.
