REVIEW/NEWS PHOTO: JIM BESEDA - Oregon City's Morgan Hornback was named the Mt. Hood Conference's softball Player of the Year in voting by the league's coaches.Oregon City's Morgan Hornback was named the Mt. Hood Conference softball Player of the Year after leading the top-ranked Pioneers to a second consecutive outright league championship.

Hornback had twice been named the league's Pitcher of the Year, but was recognized for her all-around play this season in voting by the league's coaches.

On the mound, the University of Oregon-bound junior went 13-1 with a 0.23 ERA and eight shutouts. In 90 innings pitched, Hornback allowed eight runs (three earned) on 45 hits with nine walks and 131 strikeouts.

At the plate, Hornback batted .383 (18 for 47) with three doubles, six homers and 17 RBIs.

"We think it's great," Oregon City coach Dave Adelhart said. "We really thought Morgan was the Player of the Year last year, because she does it all whether she's pitching or hitting."

Gresham's Shianne Smith was named the Mt. Hood's Pitcher of the Year, leading the Gophers to a second-place finish, one game behind the Pioneers, and an automatic berth in the OSAA Class 6A playoffs.

"I agreed with all the coaches who thought Shianne should be Pitcher of the year," Adelhart said. "She put up some great numbers, but Shianne doesn't hit, whereas Morgan does it all."

Oregon City freshman catcher Isabelle Lewis and junior utility player Zoie Iverson also were named to the all-league first team, along with Clackamas junior infielder Kylee Vanderbout.
