Fire district gets grant for radio system upgrade

Estacada Rural Fire District No. 69 has received a federal grant to upgrade its radio system.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Firefighters Assistance Program granted $344,100 to the district.

The grant required the district to put $17,200 toward the upgrade.

The funds will be used to purchase and install 17 new mobile radios and 36 portable radios.

“Washington and Clackamas counties are working toward a new format system for the radios. Probably in five to seven years there will be a complete change. We wanted to be ahead of the curve,” said Bob Morrisey, Estacada fire chief.

Morrisey said the counties are in the process of upgrading the system to a digital format.

He said keeping the system in tune with technological advances is a costly endeavor.

The money for Estacada’s last two system upgrades came from grant funds.

“We’ve been pretty successful here with grants,” Morrisey said.
