by: ISABEL GAUTSCHI - Stacia Hannum reads from her book 'Lions of Clackamas.' It’s not every day you meet a character like one of local author Stacia Hannum’s “lions.”

Hannum has written about some very unusual mentors in her self-published book “Lions of Clackamas.”

She uses the word “lion” as synonymous with “mentor” in the book, and you wouldn’t expect a lion to be ordinary.

Hannum gave a reading at the Estacada Public Library on Thursday, April 17.

During the reading she said inspiration for the book came out of a dark time: She had lost a job she didn’t like in the first place, had lost her house and was just plain frustrated with society in general.

She took a long walk in the forest, and as she walked, it occurred to her that she was not the first person to have experienced hardship.

Hannum contemplated the people in her life who had overcome hardship in extraordinary ways.

She began to write about them, and the book was born.

The first batch of “Lions of Clackamas” books have sold out.
