Adrenaline junkies attack river during annual Whitewater Festival

Annual event brings out competitors and onlookers alike

by: ISABEL GAUTSCHI - This group competed in the Paddle Team Slalom on Sunday, May 18.Kayakers, rafters, stand-up paddlers and whitewater enthusiasts of all kinds attempted to navigate the challenging course in the Carter Bridge area of the Clackamas River on the Mt. Hood National Forest, May 17-18.

Started in 1984 by the Northwest Rafters Association, the Upper Clackamas White Water Festival has grown into a big attraction.

The festival began when a group of friends challenged each other to whitewater competitions through Carter Rapids.

Now, Event Chairman Bob Mosier said, the festival is “probably the largest all whitewater event on the West Coast.”
