Wrestling team crowns two champions at Regionals

Estacada finishes fourth in the team tally at last weekends Regional championships

GLADSTONE — The Estacada wrestling team sent two wrestlers to the top of the awards stand at Saturday’s Regional wrestling championships and placed fourth in the team tally with 205 points.

Senior Don Wenlund dominated the 126-pound bracket, finishing with a 1-0 decision over top-seeded Blake McNall of Gladstone. He opened the tournament with back-to-back first-period pins, the quickest coming in 1:07 putting his Schyler Hollinger of Banks on the mat with an quick takedown before twisting his arms back to finish the fall.

Wenlund earned a No. 1 seed for the 4A state tournament, which begins Friday morning at Memorial Coliseum.

Senior Luke Youngberg backed up his No. 1 seed with a romp to the 170-pound title that saw him pin two opponents before winning his finale by injury default. He earned a No. 3 seed for the state bracket.

Junior Zach Jones reached the 138-pound finals before falling by a 23-8 technical fall to top seed Lane Stigall of North Marion. Jones reached the title bout with back-to-back pins.

Sophomore Nick Ledbury finished second at 182 pounds, opening with a 23-3 technical fall before beating Tillamook’s Gabriel Whitlatch by second-period pin in the semifinals. Ledbury came up on the short end of a 10-3 decision to Isaiah Goodrick of Scappoose in the title bout.

Damon Shaw-Leiferman went 3-3 at 113 pounds, picking up all of his wins by fall, the quickest coming in 39 seconds in his opening bout.

Stone Rathbun put together a 4-2 record in consolation bouts at 145 pounds, picking up three pins along the way.

Cole Eakin was 4-3 at 152 pounds with a pair of first-period pins.

Steven Weaver was 3-3 at 160 pounds, opening with back-to-back pins to reach the semifinals.

Scappoose won the team crown with 294 points, beating Tillamook by 18 points.
