Estacada senior Donald Wenlund leads the team with a third-place finish at 126 pounds
PORTLAND The Estacada wrestling team went a perfect 4-0 in the opening round of the 4A state tournament Friday, and the quartet of athletes piled up enough points to put the Rangers among the top-15 team finishers.
Senior Donald Wenlund entered the 126-pound bracket as the No. 1 seed and raced through his first-round bout by a 14-3 major decision. He was knocked out by a 4-2 count in the quarterfinals, but bounced back with four straight wins in the consolation bracket.
He finished his run with a 4-3 decision over Taylor Walden of Scappoose in the third-place bout a rematch from Wenlunds 3-0 win in the Regional semifinals.
The Estacada standout found himself on the wrong end of a 3-1 count midway through his final high school match. He got in on Waldens leg midway through the second period, but couldnt finish off the tying takedown before his opponent stumbled out of the circle.
With time ticking away in the period, Wenlund darted in once more, this time coming up with an ankle and crumpling Walden to the mat for a takedown that beat the buzzer.
I knew I was down and had to focus everything on getting that takedown, Wenlund said.
The effort tied the score going into the final two minutes, which started with Wenlund in the down position. Rather than trying to ride him out, Walden let him loose with 1:40 left and took his chances on scoring a takedown before time expired.
It didnt happen.
Wenlund stayed on the attack that kept Walden at a distance and the score frozen.
I went into that third period with a lot of confidence, knowing that I could get away, Wenlund said. Im glad I finished with a win, I finished the season right.

He added to his lead by locking in a cradle hold for a near fall with six seconds left in the middle round.
