Softball team pounds out a win over Seaside

The Rangers explode for a 10-run second inning to put the game out of reach

by: ESTACADA NEWS: DAVID BALL - Estacada catcher Hailey Clark fires the ball back to the pitcher. Estacada’s softball team lit up the scoreboard in the second inning to claim a 17-7 win over Seaside to wrap up its spring break.

The Rangers put up 10 runs in their breakout inning, putting together five hits, three walks and taking advantage of three Seagull errors.

Emma Burke’s two-run line-drive into centerfield sparked the rally. The team expanded its lead when Jessie Hunt sent a bouncer to the shortstop, and Bailey Hill sidestepped the catcher to beat the throw home. Hailey Clark followed with an RBI-single down the left-field line, while Stormi Ranes connected for another run-producing hit — the team’s fourth in a row.

Skylar Hunter completed the big inning with a bases-clearing triple that left the Rangers with an 11-1 lead.

Estacada kept putting up runs with Clark sending an RBI-double to the center-field fence in the third inning before sliding home herself on a wild pitch moments later.

Seaside attempted to get back into the game with a two-out rally in the fourth inning that cut the gap to 13-7. Jordan Dotson got the comeback going by punching a two-run single through the middle, and teammates Whitney Westerholm and Brittany West followed with singles before Estacada’s Hill caught a pop-up at first base to send the Gulls back to the dugout.

The Rangers rebuilt their lead in the bottom of the fourth on RBI-singles from Kassidy Runyan and Burke.

Heavy rains washed the players off the field for a delay in the fifth inning before the weather cleared and allowed Estacada to finish off the 17-7 win.

Runyan highlighted her time in the pitcher’s circle by striking out the side in the second inning.

The Rangers (3-2) dropped two of three during a spring break tournament in Seaside, ending their stay at the beach with a 21-5 win over Naselle out of Washington.

Estacada opens the Tri-Valley Conference schedule Monday at No. 4-ranked Gladstone (6-0).
