Hillsboro chamber hosts six-week course in the basics this June

Mercy Corps Northwest is partnering with the Chambers of Commerce in Forest Grove and Hillsboro and Portland Community College’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to bring a new small business training program to western Washington County.

“Get Your Business Started the Right Way” is a six-week course that covers the essentials needed to start a small business, including business-plan requirements. It is open to residents of Gaston, Banks, Cornelius, Forest Grove, North Plains and Hillsboro.

The $150 cost can be defrayed by partial scholarships, depending on income.  Maximum class size is 30, and a handful of spots will be reserved for Forest Grove residents or businesses.

The course is one of three requirements for getting an Individual Development Account (IDA) of up to $4,000, on a three-to-one matching basis, meaning for every $1 the applicant puts into the account, Mercy Corps Northwest puts in $3. The nonprofit offers these matched savings accounts to low-income people looking to start their own small business.

Other requirements for the IDA include attending at least one business seminar at Mercy Corp, and at least two hours of one-on-one counseling, which can be done from Mercy Corps or the SBDC.

Excluding July 3, the class runs Wednesdays 4 to 7 p.m. from June 5 to July 17 at the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce, 5193 N.E. Elam Young Parkway.
