NEWS-TIMES PHOTO: CHASE ALLGOODThese Star Trek action figures and model semi-trucks are waiting at the Forest Grove Fire Department for buyers to snap them up. Department staff will then use the money to buy more appropriate toys for their holiday toy drive, which serves low-income children.

The collectibles came from a generous local family that donated its extensive toy collection to Forest Grove Fire & Rescue for the cause.

The family recognized that the toys had value — but maybe not to the children served by the holiday toy drive, said Dave Nemeyer. “What kid in 2013 would appreciate a 1991 Star Trek Next Generation action figure?” he said.NEWS-TIMES PHOTO: CHASE ALLGOOD

FGF&R is selling some of the better items on eBay, where they will bring in the most bang for the buck, Nemeyer said. But the other items they are selling for less than eBay value because “we aren’t a toy store, so we want to make some people who actually want these things happy,” he added. At the same time, he said, the proceeds can buy Barbies and Hot Wheels play sets, which will make toy-drive recipients happy, too.

Prices range from $5 for a small Star Trek Next Generation action figure to $100 for the nicest of the collectible, die-cast cars, said Nemeyer, estimating sales will raise about $1,500 to purchase toys for needy families this holiday season.
