New crossing lights replace automatic with push-button

Forest Grove flashers also adorn two new crosswalks elsewhere

The previous warning lights there — and at 19th Avenue on the other side of the Ballad Towne Square parking lot — would sometimes begin flashing when pedestrians weren’t actually crossing, triggered erroneously by other motion, said Rob Foster, the city’s public works director.

The flashers installed Friday, Jan. 24, need a pedestrian to press a button before they start flashing.

A similar set of warning flashers went up on Gales Creek Road (Highway 8), along with a new crosswalk for pedestrians moving between Forest Gale Drive and Willamina Avenue. The city partnered on the project with Washington County, which has jurisdiction of the road at that point and will maintain the crosswalk. The crossing project was completed Jan. 20.

Likewise, city and county partnered on a new crosswalk project with another set of pedestrian-activated flashers on Northwest Thatcher Road where it intersects with Northwest David Hill Road. Residents of several nearby housing developments often cross the road there to get to Thatcher Park on the other side. The project was completed in December.by: NEWS-TIMES PHOTO: CHASE ALLGOOD - As of Jan. 24, pedestrians must press a button to activate the yellow flashing warning lights at the crosswalk between Safeway and Goodwill, requiring drivers to stop and let them cross.

The crosswalk between Goodwill and Safeway, which has been there for years, is still plagued by another problem, Foster said: cars sometimes try to cross from the Goodwill parking lot to the Safeway lot, even though a sign prohibiting that practice has been posted for years.
