Forest Grove High food drive seeks donations
Members of Forest Grove High School's student government (ASB) are collecting non-perishable food and money to feed the hungry.
The annual drive runs Monday, Nov. 27, to Friday, Jan. 5.
Now a FGHS junior, ASB Vice President Victor Chavez has been spearheading the event since his freshman year. Nobody was stepping up to lead the drive three years ago, Chavez said, likely because it's a lot of work and many students gravitate toward organizing fun student events like dances. "But no one should be hungry," said Chavez, who's had trouble drumming up donations for the drive in the past. "I'm hoping people will see it's important to support those around you and have an open heart and be nice to one another."
Last year, Forest Grove Bi-Mart and Beaverton's Trader Joes donated to the cause.
This year, Chavez is trying to build up more business connections and spread the word throughout the larger community in addition to FGHS with the help of his ASB team. They're hoping to gather $100 and 500 pounds of food.
Food collected during the first half of the drive will go to the Forest Grove Elks Lodge, where Elks can distribute it from their food pantry. Chavez will donate the rest of the food and monetary donations to the Oregon Food Bank.
This year, the dates of the drive are extended. It begins before winter break and ends after because "there's a large focus of feeding people around the holidays, but people aren't just hungry around the holidays," Chavez said. "No one should go hungry any day of the year."
