Greyhounds punch playoff ticket
Gaston baseball set to make its first state playoff appearance since 2005
Gaston baseball is back in the postseason.
The Greyhounds, who havent earned a Class 2A state playoff berth since 2005, rallied from an early five-run deficit last Wednesday to defeat Faith Bible 9-5 in a Northwest League playoff game at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
The victory earned Gaston (14-11) a trip to Roseburg for a first-round playoff game against Umpqua Valley Christian (20-7), scheduled for today at 4:30 p.m.
No. 1-ranked Knappa (26-1)and No. 5 Portland Christian (21-5) locked up playoff berths by finishing first and second in the league, respectively, but third-place Gaston had to play its way into the postseason.
Faith Bible beat Vernonia 12-1 in the first game last Wednesday, and the Falcons took an early 5-0 lead against Gaston in the nightcap before the Greyhounds rallied.
Gaston scored three runs in the third inning to get within 5-3, then surged ahead with a five-run fourth. The Hounds added an insurance run in the sixth for the final margin.
A victory today would send the Greyhounds to Fridays state quarterfinals.
