Forest Grove qualifies four wrestlers for State
Forest Grove finished fifth in last week's Greater Valley Conference District Championships Feb. 2-3 at McKay High School in Salem.
The Vikings qualified four wrestlers for the state championships Feb. 16-17 at the Memorial Coliseum, including junior Ivan Torres, who won the 120-pound weight division, sophomore Gavin Rice and Alam Castro who placed third at 170 and 285 pounds, and senior Gustavo Silva who finished fourth in the 182-pound weight class.
Torres, who finished fourth at last year's districts, pinned all three of his opponents on his way to the 120-pound final, and pinned West Salem's Sebastian De Leon in 3:17 seconds in Saturday's final.
Forest Grove point-earners included: Rolando Orozco (113) 13 pts, Otoniel Tencos-Garcia (113) 6 pts, Mynor Oppenlander (120) 3 pts, Ivan Torres (120) 30 pts, Hunter Reynolds (132) 3 pts, Andres Echeverria-Gonzalez (132) 3 pts, Esaias Castaneda-Cortez (138) 3 pts, Christian Gutierrez (138) 2 pts, David Glover (145) 3 pts, Adrian Gutierrez (152) 17 pts, Jeffrey Falla (152) 11 pts, Trevor Brenner (160) 15 pts, Gavin Rice (170) 19 pts, Gustavo Silva (182) 17 pts, Kyle Daily (195) 10 pts, Kurtis Van Dyke (195) 4 pts, Julius Jones (220) 4 pts, and Alam Castro (285) 16 pts.
Sprague won the team event going away, scoring 459.5 points and boasting four individual champions, three seconds and five thirds, qualifying 16 wrestlers for state in all. West Albany was second with 229 points, McNary third with 211.5, McMinnville fourth 203, Forest Grove 179, North Salem 163, West Salem 149, McKay 104, South Salem 103.
The OSAA 6A State Championships' preliminary rounds begin Feb. 16, with the championships being held Saturday evening, Feb. 17.
